Hello boys and girls, and welcome to the ATXBS.com Wall of Shame! If you've been harassed by a motorist, struck by a car, had something thrown at you, been improperly dealt with by a cop, and have any information about the incident and/or the driver, please post it here in the comments section.

If you want to post an image of the "shame-e", please change the "Input Format" of your comment to "Full HTML". That'll allow you to post IMG tags and such.

If you've been injured and need to contact a lawyer, The Shefman Law Group is a local firm that specializes in working with injured cyclists. Check them out: http://www.shefmanlaw.net/. I know it goes without saying (I mean look at me!) but I'm not affiliated with these guys in any way. I've never even used them so I don't know if they suck or not (many lawyers do) but they seem to be the guys to go to for bike-related legal counsel.

Another avenue of recourse if you've been harassed by a police officer is to go to the Office of Police Monitor.

Office of Police Monitor

This douche bags the other night threw a firework at me when I was riding down manshack the other night and it made me loose control and crash. I didn't see what kinda car it was but it was fucking stupid.

Hey ya'll

I was hit on 5th at West by a (1998?) gold Lincoln Towncar full of hoodlums. Seriously, tear drop tats and everything.
License plate BN5 X923.
It was an intentional rear-ending. If you see the car, steer clear. They will fuck with your shit and threaten you. And they definitely out-weigh you.

This sounds like the same car, and group of thugs that busted in my house, robbed, and beat me up a few years ago. can the person who submitted this get in touch with me via email? I always had a description of the vehicle, and thugs, but never the license plate number. This will be very helpful..

This morning (13 July 2010) at about 7 a.m. I was riding northbound on Spruce Canyon in west Circle C. As I approached the intersection with LaCrosse, a man in a dark gray car began to take a left from LaCrosse onto Spruce Canyon. He either didn't see me or disregarded me. I had to brake to avoid a collision. As I passed him, I said "WTF?" quite inaudibly, but apparently he was great lip reader. He did a sudden u-turn, tires squealing, and came up next to me about 100 yards north of the intersection. Spewing obscenities, he said he saw me say the word "fuck" (I guess he can say it but no one else can), that I'd better watch my ass, because, in his words, "next time, I'm gonna get out of this car and beat the shit out of you, you little pussy." Then with another squeal of tires and u-turn he was gone.

Sadly I didn't get his license plate number. He seemed intent on preventing me from doing so, slowing down when I braked, speeding up when I accelerated. He was a white male, probably in his 30s, very short dark hair, driving a dark gray car (not an SUV or pickup). I filed a report with APD today, but without a tag number, there's not much they can do.

Has anyone else encountered this guy? If so, please contact me or APD and we'll see what can be done.

Otherwise, all I can say to my fellow bikers is BE CAREFUL weekday mornings in Circle C. There's a nutcase on the road over here and the next cyclist he confronts may get more than a verbal confrontation. Ride with a buddy if you can, keep your phone in your back pocket and call 911 if any motorist behaves like this toward you.

Peace,
Patrick

This happened in full day light. I was on my way to the Thursday night social ride. I was going about 15mph when a black Chevy (I think an Avalanche) turned right in front of me so close I did not even have time to react. I hit the side of their truck and slid with my bike (I have clipless pedals) I remember seeing their rear tire a few inches from my face as I slid into the next lain where there was another car at the stop sign. I got up and laid on the side walk and my back hurt pretty good. They stopped for a moment about 30ft away but did not ask if I was ok or even say anything and then drove off as I laid there. Luckily there was a guy who just happen to see the whole think and got their plates along with someone else. They said the plates are 97PBV8 and the other witness said 97PVB8. I believe that 97PBV8 is correct, it is a black Chevy truck. I called 911 and the police got there very quick, officer Cleveland #6292 was very helpful and suggested that I press charges, (which I am). He said that what they did was failure to render aid which is a felony. I think I should get a lawyer, any suggestions?

... and they'll take like 1/3rd.

The police will take care of the prosecuting them part on their own. You may have to testify, but that's about it.

Their insurance will likely take care of you (damage to bike, medical bills, pain and suffering) without suing them if there are multiple witnesses to the event.

Really, you should only have to sue if you don't like what their insurance company says -- but with multiple witnesses, they're not likely to give you too much grief unless the witnesses say you were partially to blame.

If you witnessed this cyclist hit by a geo metro/civic or tercel looking car at or around 8:30 PM, please call the Shefman Law Group or write to us at cyclistlaw.com, 512-386-8117.

Friday, March 26, 2010, I was riding northbound in the right lane of the 1st Street Bridge. I was taking the lane as I usually do every day on my commute home. The bridge was COMPLETELY empty, meaning there were two other open lanes. A pickup flies into my lane and buzzes me...close enough that I could of touched it.

I caught up to the driver, who was in the right turn lane preparing to go east on Cesar Chavez. He had his window down, so I asked him, "Were you trying to make a statement there."

He picked up a baseball bat with his right hand (kind of a half-sized one, but bigger than the little mini versions) and said, "Stay off the fucking road."

I told him that I didn't have to, etc. and asked him what he planned to do with his bat. A few more expletives were exchanged and then he sped off on Cesar Chavez. I got a plate number and called 911...but of course, nothing will come of it, particularly since there weren't any witnesses. Ran plates and didn't come up with anything, so I wonder if I screwed up the number or not...or if it's because the new plates out aren't registering in public info databases yet?

Texas plates? I only recall seeing six digits/letters and I looked at a bunch of pictures I took recently and all the TX plates I saw only had six ...

Either way, scary.

are now appearing in Texas.

I was riding around pedicabbing last night when I witnessed a hit-and-run on 8th and Colorado around 2:45am. The rider's shoes and hat flew off and he fell in the middle of the street. The yellow Nissan XTerra that hit him swung around and sped off westbound on 8th. The bike was caught between the grill and the front tires and they dragged it off with them. The rider was very bloodied and may have suffered a concussion but thankfully had no life-threatening injuries; at least thats what the paramedics told me. The police came and I gave them all the information I could but by that time the Xterra(and his bicycle) were long gone. The rider's name is Mark and he was a Jimmy John's bike delivery guy, but thats really all I could get out of him, he was in a lot of pain. If you know Mark or know about the condition he is in now, or know anything about the yellow Xterra, please let me know, I really want to know if he ended up alright. Ride safe ya'll.

I would like to thank the asshole who vandalized Uncle Billy's during the Hot Pants Dance Prance ride. You tagged "FUCK YOU, I RIDE BIKES" with orange marker not only in the bathroom but all over the restaurant and patio as well. Thanks to your dumbass graffiti, no one will be riding their bike to Uncle Billy's anymore, so the FUCK is YOU!

I don't care if you want to insult angry motorists or vandalize their cars while you're riding around, but why would want to make enemies with a bar that is nice enough to host the party you are attending? Thats one hell of a way to say thanks to the people who gave you the free beer you were drinking. You will regret shitting where you eat.

Now the once bike friendly management at the brewery may ban all future bike related parties including The Draft or Drag Race after party I organized. If you know of any other breweries with a parking garage for games, high quality free beer, and a stage for live music that's not already booked for SXSW, I would love to hear it...

Everyone in the bike community should be repulsed by this behavior. If anyone has any information on who this fuckhead is please let me know so I can split his head open with my u-lock. Or, if you prefer a less violent brand of justice, please contact the nice folks at Uncle Billy's Brew Pub directly.

Could it have been a non-cyclist trying to give cyclists a bad name?

> I don't care if you want to insult angry motorists or
> vandalize their cars while you're riding around

I care. Don't do that shit either. They're often already unhappy enough -- why add to it? It also often makes things harder for the other cyclists around. And actual vandalism will draw police attention. Ride around, have a good time. There's no need to be a dick about it -- even if they are. They're stuck in traffic, you can ride off. What could be better than that? (Rhetorical answer: also being able to hear the lamentions of their women as you ride off, of course ...)

so back in september i was leaving an office on the corner of 5th and red river. i mounted my bike on the sidewalk 10 feet from the road and rode out to the south side of red river heading north. a cop was sitting at the light in the left lane waiting to cross 5th too, so i waited right in front of him until the light changed. then i headed up to 6th where there was a vehicle in both lanes waiting at a second red light. i went between them and then stopped in front of the car in the left lane to make a left on 6th. it was only a moment i was stopped until the light changed. i turned left knowing the cop was still behind me. i stopped for a third red light on 6th at neches. when that turned green i made it half a block before the cop pulled me over. he badgered me for "riding on the sidewalk" and "splitting the lane" then he wrote me a ticket for running a red light that i didnt run at 6th and red river when i made the left. why would i stop at the red lights before and after that intersection, knowing a cop was watching me, but not stop at that one? this ticket is flat out bullshit. i dont understand why he just yelled at me for laws that i actually may have violated in the strictest technical sense, but only cited me for breaking a law i didnt actually break.

everyone who gets a ticket from apd should contest it. even if youre found guilty the judge will most likely lower the fine below the mail-in level. let us flood the courts with bicycle trials that go nowhere until they get tired of wasting tax payer money harassing us. if you are found guilty you can do community service at yellow bike project instead of paying in cash.

The following was relayed to me by a cyclist, and didn't happen to me directly:

Was riding south on nueces today when a car was stopped at 12th street at a light so I decided to go around them. Let me point out that it was a green light. I had my earbuds in but could still hear the woman honk and shout something rude. So being passive as I am I continued to ride southbound on Nueces. She easily passed me being in a car vs my human powered bicycle and swerved infront of me at the stop sign. (swerved towards the curb). Considering this is the most common move on motorists part I was rather prepared and simply swerved left and once again went around her. She proceeded to follow me all the way down nueces, then on 6th, and finally passed me going across the lamar bridge and honked again and utilized her sun roof by flicking me off. I waved.
As irony has it she got caught at the Barton Springs light and so once again I caught up to her but this time decided to ride up next to her to see what the hell her deal was and before I could even say anything she started bitching me out, so I took her plates and said fuck it I'll just go home.

So here you have it:

X55 BPW

Blue VW beetle

Another crazy driver that seems to have some inexplicable hatred for people with only two wheels and nothin but their legs to power it.

Figured you might be able to post it up, keep people on the look out for her, stay out of her way that's a crazy bia.

I was commuting to work last Wednesday (July 15) south down the Lamar/Pease sidewalk and just as I emerged out of the underpass under Lamar, a guy on a mountain bike dropped onto the trail coming down the steep grassy bank from Lamar (by House Park). He basically materialized in front of me blocking the trail and I t-boned him and flipped over my handlebars and him. I landed on my back on something painful. AFTER HE GOT ME OFF OF HIS BAG AND BIKE HE PICKED THEM UP AND RAN AWAY IN THE DIRECTION FROM WHICH HE CAME. Anyway, five broken ribs right next to my spine.

IF YOU SEE OR KNOW THIS GUY, TELL HIM HE'S A PUD.

Description: dark hair, ponytail, 45 to 55 years old, dark tan, rides orange fade cannondale with the old style under the head tube mono-shock. No helmet, maybe a gimme cap. For a picture (since I don't know how to post it here), look at the atxbs home page or the craigslist posting: http://austin.craigslist.org/bik/1281893143.html

Was riding in New Braunfels earlier today, and was hit by a navy blue PT Cruiser, plates: 5XY (handicap) RD. I got off my bike, stood in front of the car and requested his insurance information two times, to which he replied "You were in my way, no." Mind you, there were two cyclist in the lane in a 10mph zone in the local park. As predicted, the police arrived and told me I am essentially out of luck and they wont help to reimburse any damage done. Thank you once again local PD.

No, the police won't help you get reimbursed. They don't do stuff like that. However you should tell the police that you want an accident report filed. You are entitled to a copy. You then use that information to contact the driver's insurance company.
Um, just how badly were you hurt or your bike damaged? If it's neglible then it may not be worth the effort.

(No, it wasn't me -- I just saw this on CL, thought it was worth mentioning here)

Last night (Friday about 9:30 p.m.) on Shoal Creek Blvd, just south of 2222, I was run off the road by a driver in a black Mitsubishi SUV. Luckily, I was able to jump up the curb and behind a light pole. Otherwise, I would have been run over.

The driver (male, white, 30s, tall) then got out of the car and started yelling furiously.

A neighbor in one of the nearby houses heard the incident and came out to their front porch and shouted to ask what was going on.

The driver then got back in his SUV and drove off.

If you encounter something similar, get the license plate and report it to the police.

Look out for a white, male, 30s, driving a black Mitsubishi SUV.

This guy is dangerous.

So I went for a ride yesterday on my new Cannondale six. I was riding a short stint down Cameron to turn on 51st and head out, but as the road narrowed to a left and right turn lane (narrow lanes at that), the bitch behind the wheel of capital metro bus 7449 decided to try to squeeze between me and the traffic in the left turn lane. She didn't fit and luckily only ended up hitting my elbow with one of the running lights on the side of the bus. No crash, no scratches on the bike. I caught her stopped at the light to turn south on I-35, whipped out my camera phone, took a picture of the bus number, and called Capital Metro to complain. I also used a few choice expletives to yell at the bus driver. I have to follow up on the incident to make sure she at least gets a good year of suspension from driving a public transportation vehicle, but thought I'd give a heads up, so watch out for those buses!

Thanks for the details of this accident.
In general I suggest that we avoid addressing the other driver with expletives...it makes them angry and raises our own blood pressure.
Use legal means to address the problem, which you are doing.

I was riding home from the gangsta mass after party a little after the keg was floated and was hit by a new black sedan who went before her green light. They hit me from the side and knocked me out on impact. My friend who saw it said they kind of dragged me on the side of the car for a few feet then I landed on my head and then they left.I was going downhill on Guadalupe and got hit at 5th around 11:00pm. Left me unconscious for 5 minutes. Woke up in the ambulance going to Brackenridge. I now know it was a 2004 gray Pontiac 4-Door Sedan.

They drove off eastward down 5th but got caught a few blocks away or something because my exact shoe print was left in their side mirror, and I think I cracked their windshield . Fractured my wrist, cuts and road rash, fuckin sore back, a welp on my forehead. Hit and run on a cyclist, that's a felony. I hate to say it but I hope that bitch spent at least a night in jail, I'm in mad pain and have to move in two days.

This is all I know right now 'cause it just happened last night and I'm kinda hopped up on meds. I'm just grateful for not being too banged up, hopefully I'll be good by next Critical Mass.

This one was forwarded to me via email:

I was on Congress, riding home from work, and a Cap Metro bus was stopped in the right lane in front of me, in the middle of the block, not an intersection. I pulled up behind the bus, thinking it would move soon, but it never did, so I decided to go around it. I turned and signaled to the next approaching motorist that I wanted to move over. They waved and nodded, then slowed almost to a stop, and I waved back. As I moved into the lane, I heard them accelerate quickly. I moved as close to the bus as I could, but they sped by, and buzzed me pretty badly. I got thrown into the side of the bus and almost fell under the moving vehicle. I kept my balance and moved back in front of the bus to catch the car at the next light. The woman driving flicked me off and wouldn't roll down her window, so I got her plate numbers. She was hauling ass as I was writing them down, but Im pretty sure I got em right. Enjoy:

Black Chevy Tahoe, not more than a year or two old
Woman driving was a little on the heavy side, light colored hair, late twenties to thirties
Handicapped tag hanging from the rearview mirror (she seemed able enough to put her foot on the goddamn gas pedal)
Plates: 344-XSY

Buzzing is bad enough, but purposely baiting and running down a cyclist? Bullshit.

What is the easiest way to remove hard water marks from a glass shower screens?

... are back, Jason!

His real name is probably James Hogue. He has a rather colorful past described in the New Yorker magazine (September 3, 2001). You can wiki James Hogue to get further information.

I am almost positive that James Hogue is still in prison. That would have been crazy though.

White Chevy Colorado w/ a topper and a black cargo rack on top tried to crowd past me as we pulled up to the light at 2222 heading northbound on Shoal Creek Blvd. this morning at about 8:10. I holler something mildly sarcastic-soundingly, like "Hello? Watch out for me, please. Thank you."

Dude puts the truck in park, gets out and begins to yell at me something to the effect of "you people need to learn how to ride on the road..." Unfortunately, I didn't observe better judgment by remaining calm, and instead tried to yell back, not obscenities and anger, but things like "please share the road," "you're going to hurt someone," "what you did was illegal," etc. Unfortunately, most of this was lost, as he was too busy yelling at top of his lungs. But, evidently he did hear the word "illegal," and this seems to have touched a nerve. He storms up to me very aggressively, maybe an inch or two from my face, and proceeds to yell something at me (at this point, I was too busy trying to anticipate any physical violence that he might hurl my way, and didn't hear a word of whatever he was trying to say).

Not a very pleasant gentleman. He seems to have some anger issues, and evidently harbors some irrational hatred toward cyclists. So, watch out for him.

His license plate is TX 78T FJ4.

On the most-recent Halloween Critical Mass (Friday, October 31st, 2008) an officer drove his car into the crowd of Critical Mass cyclists in a very unsafe and aggressive manner, forcing cyclist traffic into parked cars and a curb. In this act he recklessly endangered their well-being and showed little regard for human life. The result of his actions was the apprehension of a single under-aged minor cyclist (out of a crowd of over 400), who as of now has spent almost 60 hours in police custody.

Here's the officer's information:

Officer Nametag: Spc. A Goodwin
Badge Number: 3940

His squad car carried the following identifying marks:

Car number: 8547
License Plate: 102-6336

Keep an eye out y'all, this guy is reckless and obviously a danger to cyclists! He's proven himself in the past to be willing to beat a suspect to death with a flashlight, so be very careful in your dealings with this officer of the law.

How'd you manage to find out where he lived?

Probably http://www.publicdata.com/ or something similar.

TXDL information is available for a fee. For something like a few thousand dollars you can get tapes of the entire database, and then for some more money they'll send you updates.

So then publicdata.com put this data up on the Interweb. And people screamed `privacy!' ... so they made it illegal. Which didn't really stop publicdata -- they just moved offshore.

Looks like the law changed again, and now they're back here.

In any event, if the government has your data, they're probably selling that data to somebody else.
