Need some drupal help dealing with SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM!

By Jason - Posted on 24 October 2012

I want to do something with this page but the amount of spam accounts and comments I get is out of control and it drives me freaking nuts every time I login. Aside from turning on moderate everything, anyone know of a way to cut that shit out? If so please let me know!

I want to revive ATXBS because I think there's a place for it, but if I can't figure out how to make the current platform work I may archive all this shit and just start something new. Check out another blog platform, or maybe even something else entirely.

Either way, it's high time for something new around here.

TOMORROW NIGHT (5/3): Pedalling for Safer Streets - Community ride to the Capitol.

By Jason - Posted on 02 May 2012

05/03/2012 - 7:00pm

Largely organized by the PLEASE Be Kind To Cyclists folks as well as other organizations and people around town, tomorrow night there's going to be a group ride meeting at City Hall (Caesar Chavez and Lavaca) and continuing on at a slow pace to the Capitol. Not sure what else is planned, but here's the facebook event info if you'd like to know more:

The Austin cycling community is shocked and saddened by the recent death of cyclist Verter Ginestra, killed on 360 and Westlake on Saturday, April 28th and the serious injuries of cyclist Evan Baird caused by a hit and run collision on Monday, April 23rd.

We as a community will come together on Thursday, May 3rd, 2012, at 7 pm at City Hall. Then we will ride our bikes slowly to the Capitol building down Congress Avenue.

Thursday’s gathering will be a chance to send a message to lawmakers to create better infrastructure for cyclists, to implement comprehensive safety awareness and education among drivers, and to create and enforce laws protecting cyclists.

Saturday’s fatal crash and Monday’s hit and run mark two serious cycling tragedies in Austin in less than a week. There have been three cycling deaths so far this year and many more injured. We hope that this gathering can be a catalyst for change to educate drivers and protect everyone who rides a bicycle.

Please join us to spread this very important message. We are expecting 1000+ people to attend this event.

**Update: Thursday Night Social Ride will be joining us!**

The events leading up to this ride have received a fair bit of news coverage, as well as some TV time with Evan Baird, the cyclist who was hit and left lying in the road about a week ago.

I expect to see all of ya'll on the ride. The TNSR will be meeting up with the ride at the Capitol so if you plan on getting sloshed on that ride instead, fuck you, just go on the goddamn memorial ride and meet up with your friends at the fucking Capitol. This is bigger than you.

RIP Verter and hope you heal up quick Evan.

Memorial Ride for Justin Murphy meets at NORTH Bicycle Sport Shop

By Jason - Posted on 07 March 2012

03/07/2012 - 5:00pm

About a month and a half back a cyclist named Justin Murphy was struck and killed in a hit-and-run collision with a large truck up in North Austin. This evening there will be a memorial ride to honor the life of a fallen cyclist, and to help raise awareness in the area of cyclists on the streets. This ride meets at the NORTH Bicycle Sport Shop location.

Memorial ride for Justin Murphy

Date: This Wednesday, March 7 2012

Time: 5:00 to 7:00 pm

Location: Bicycle Sport Shop Research Blvd. Location.

Specifics: This memorial ride is dedicated to Justin Murphy, a person who used his bicycle as a means of transportation and was killed while walking his bike. Justin was killed on January 23 2012, on the service road of 183 north and McNeil.

The purpose of this memorial is to honor his life and to pay respect to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Murphy. We will gather at the parking lot of Bicycle Sport Shop and we will ride our bikes heading north for about two miles to the location of the crash; where we will erect a ghost bike memorial.

We will gather to honor the life of a member of our community, a son, a brother, a friend and a neighbor, not just a cyclist. And to send a message to everyone of our lost, his sister Ryann Reedy, teacher at Smithson Valley Middle school in Spring Branch will try to attend the memorial..

You participation is greatly appreciated, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. News media will be present at the memorial.

I am looking forward to seeing you.

Be there by 5pm, as I figure this is a ride that combines multiple riding disciplines and roadies like to be on time for things.

March Full Moon Cruise happens TOMORROW NIGHT!

By Jason - Posted on 06 March 2012

03/07/2012 - 11:30pm

The moon is looking awfully full, and sure enough, tomorrow night heralds another Full Moon Cruise! DougMC is on the case with all the details we need to get in on the action:

It's that time again!

Our predecessors had several names for the March full moon -- Full Worm Moon, Full Crow Moon, Full Crust Moon, Full Sap Moon. Take your pick.

Either way, the weather is beginning to warm up a bit, so let's go ride some bikes!

So, Wednesday night, March 7th, 2012... just before midnight ... Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge ... be there!
We will ride out at about 12:30 am.

The route is generally determined on the fly, but it's been a while -- I'd say it might be time to head up to Mount Bonnell again, then see where the moon takes us from there?

As always, ride at your own risk, having lights on your bike at night is a good idea and it's always prudent to have at least enough equipment to change a flat.

Mt Bonnell? Oh damn. PARTY TIME! 11:30pm on the bridge, ride leaves about 45 minutes or so later. Tired of people yelling at you when to stop, start, stay to the right? Check this shit out.

Brooks

Thanks Brooks. Just do me a favor and don't fill in ALL of the creek crossing, I like to bomb across that CX style and it'd be a bummer if it were too easy...

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand... WE'RE BACK!

By Jason - Posted on 27 February 2012

Thanks to the miraculous healing touch of the resident machine god Ed, ATXBS is actually back up and running. To be honest I didn't think it was going to happen, or at least not without losing years worth of posts and data.

But it did. Because Ed is the fucking man.

Thanks Ed.

Full WOLF Moon Cruise happens TONIGHT!

By Jason - Posted on 08 January 2012

01/08/2012 - 4:15pm

DougMC's got this shit on lock, with a facebook event and all the details on tonight's ride:

The first full moon cruise of 2012 is nearly here!

The next full moon happens in the early morning hours of this coming Monday, which means we assemble this coming Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 11:59pm CST.

This would be the "Full Wolf Moon". Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January’s full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most tribes applied that name to the next Moon (as I will.)

This Sunday night ... just before midnight ... Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge ... be there!
We will ride out at about 12:30 am.

As always, ride at your own risk, having lights on your bike at night is a good idea and it's always prudent to have at least enough equipment to change a flat.

There's a reason we call the man DougMC. Because he's the fucking MASTER! Be on the bridge tonight round midnight to get in on the good times.

RIP: James Clayton, bicycle thief, cyclist, human

By Jason - Posted on 28 December 2011

That's right folks, bicycle thief super-villain James Clayton has passed, at least according to his facebook page, as well as the page of his lady friend. Rob D'Amico clued me in to the facebook pages, thanks Rob.

His last posting on facebook was on the 23rd, and on the 24th his death was announced. Thus ends a chapter in Austin bike history, as well as the life of a human being named James Clayton. Sure, in his day he was a prolific bike thief, now he's a dead bike thief.

So it goes.

The Dropout presents: Bike Taxi Babes 2012 Calendar Release Party! TONIGHT!

By Jason - Posted on 12 December 2011

12/12/2011 - 9:00pm

Tonight at the Scoot Inn, Scott, Leana, and a whole bevy of beautiful pedicabber ladies are going to be showing off the brand-spanking-new 2012 Bike Taxi Babes calendar!

Here are the details from the Facebook event for if you're lazy and don't want to click your mouse again:

Though the calendar will be out for over a week before this, you know us at The Dropout. We just can't release anything without a party. This is going to be a great one too. It's our first one ever at a bar. The Scoot is the oldest bar in Austin, it's super bike friendly and conveniently located central to our pedicab shops. The bar is serving great drink specials and Jack Trades and Diyei BONES will be spinning tunes for the evening. Come dance with us! Get your calendar signed! Get lucky in a round of Chicken Shit BINGO! You've never had this much fun on a Monday.

Anyone who's been knows, ain't no party like a dropout party. If you aren't there, you probably forgot because you don't have a calendar. It's okay because you can get on on our website while they last. www.biketaxibabes.com

Show the ladies your support! This event is gonna rock. Invite your friends and please share this on Facebook too. Thank You!

Get there tonight. Shit starts around 9pm. Good times will be had by most, as it's impossible to please everybody.
